Aircraft - Locations - Group and Duty - Books

No.631 Squadron was a target-towing and gun laying training squadron that was based in Wales from its formation 1943 until the end of the Second World War.

The squadron was formed on 1 December 1943 by the merger of Nos.1605 and 1628 Flights. At first it only operated the Hawker Henley, using it as a target tug to provide targets for gunnery ranges in Wales. This role continued to the end of the war, although the Henleys were replaced with Martinets in September 1944 and with Vengeances and Spitfires at the end of the fighting.

In March 1944 the squadron was given a number of Hurricanes and these were used for gun laying training, with observers in the aircraft correcting the fall of shot from the guns.

The squadron continued to perform these two roles after the end of the and survived until 11 February 1949 when it was renumbered as No.20 Squadron.
